Modes of Control

Rules of Thumb

  • 1 HP = 4.5 CFM @ 125 PSIG discharge pressure
  • Most water-cooled aftercoolers will require about 3 GPM per 100 CFM of compressed air @ 100 PSIG.
  • Every 2 PSIG change in pressure equals 1% change in HP.
  • Amperage Draw
    • Single Phase     115V - 10 AMP/HP:  230 V - 5 AMP/HP
    • Three Phase      230V - 2-1/2 AMP/HP:  460V - 1-1/4 AMP

Formulas

  • Is your compressor providing the flow it is published to deliver?
  • Pump Up Equation is used to calculate how long it will take to fill an air receiver to a specified pressure.
T min =
(1 GAL / 7.48 ft^2)(Diff. Pressure)
(Atmospheric Pressure in PSI X Delivery Volume of compressor in CFM)

    • Example:  How long does it take to pump up a 120 gallon tank from 0 PSIG to 100 PSIG with a 50 CFM compressor?  The calculation requires the knowledge of the atmospheric pressure.  At sea level, atmospheric pressure is 14.7 PSI.  As the altitude rises, the atmospheric pressure will decrease.  In the Mid Atlantic, we generally use 14.5 PSI.
T min =
(120/ 7.48) (100)
(14.5 X 200)

T min =
2.21 minutes

    • Example:  What size should the compressor be for a process that requires 1000 SCFM? (Site Conditions: 14.4 Bar Pressure, 95 F, 60% Relative Humidity; STD Conditions: 14.7 Bar Pressure, 60F, 0% Relative Humidity)
